Which Carcamp tent is best suited to beginners?

If you are starting from scratch, the best choice is the one that simplifies your life: check the vehicle first and then choose based on how you will travel. If you want space and a habitability/price ratio, look at folding awnings like Alba or Aurora. If instead you want fast opening, tidier closed dimensions and frequent use, consider Dolomia or Ardesia.

The right question is not "which tent is the best?", but "which tent is most consistent with my vehicle, my crew and my way of traveling?".

Is a soft folding awning or a hard awning better?

A soft folding tent favors space, habitability and versatility. It is often the most suitable choice if you want to sleep comfortably, travel with the family or create a more "camping" setup. A rigid tent favors speed, order, shell protection and cleaner management during frequent trips.

  • Choose Alba or Aurora if you want internal space and a truly large sleeping area.
  • Choose Dolomia if you want a solid, tidy and comfortable compass rigid.
  • Choose Ardesia if you want a light, compact and fast triangular rigid.
How many seats does a rooftop tent really have?

The “places” help you orient yourself, but they are not enough. You need to consider the occupants' size, height, desired sleeping space, any children, dog, nightwear, sleeping bags and items you want to keep inside. A tent declared for multiple people does not automatically mean that it is the most suitable for your vehicle: more space often means more weight and more bulk.

Can a rooftop tent replace a camper, van or caravan?

It depends on what you're looking for. A rooftop tent doesn't offer a bathroom, internal kitchen or integrated heating like a camper, but it allows you to travel with the vehicle you already own, sleep off the ground and leave with a much lighter set-up. It's a great alternative for weekend getaways, road trips, rallies, light off-roading, active holidays and outdoor adventures.

2. Compatibility with cars, SUVs, 4x4s, vans and pick-ups

Compatibility does not just depend on the roof of the car. It depends on the combination of vehicle + bars + tent + accessories + intended use.

Can I fit a rooftop tent Carcamp on my car?

In most cases yes, but a serious check is needed. You need to check:

  • maximum roof load capacity indicated by the vehicle manufacturer;
  • capacity of roof bars, platform or roof rack;
  • weight of the chosen tent and any accessories left on the roof;
  • distance and position of the bars with respect to the awning fixing tracks;
  • total height of the vehicle once the tent is installed;
  • compatibility with tailgate, antennas, spoilers, panoramic roof and accessories already present.
Can the tent be mounted directly on the roof of the car?

No. The rooftop tent must be secured to a suitable roof bars, roof rack, platform or structure. The roof of the car is not a direct support surface: the load must be transferred through correct fixing points and components compatible with the vehicle.

Can I mount it on a city car or small car?

Yes, some compact cars may be compatible with lightweight, properly sized tents. In these cases, dynamic load control is even more important: awning, bars and accessories must fall within the limits indicated by the vehicle manufacturer. On small vehicles it is best to favor compact tents, low weight and careful driving.

Can I fit a tent on an SUV, off-road vehicle or pick-up?

Yes, SUVs, 4x4s and pick-ups are often great bases for a rooftop tent, but nothing should be taken for granted. On a pick-up you can evaluate the cab roof, cargo bed bars, bed rack or hard-top, but each structure must have a declared load capacity. For off-road use, long dirt roads or heavy journeys, a more robust and well-distributed fastening solution is preferable.

Can I mount it on a panoramic roof or glass roof?

Only if the vehicle manufacturer and the bar system allow it. The glass must never be a point of support or load. The awning must unload on the bars and structural points provided. With a panoramic roof, sunroof or very large glass surfaces, a specific check is always recommended before purchasing.

Do you need to update your registration card?

In general, a closed and correctly transported rooftop tent is managed as a load/accessory mounted on bars or roof racks, but it is the driver's responsibility to respect the capacity, shape, fixing and safety. In the case of permanent fittings, structural modifications, non-removable accessories or specific doubts, it is prudent to consult a professional or the competent bodies.

3. Bars, roof racks, dynamic load and static load

This is the most important technical point. Many doubts arise because the weight of the tent, the weight of the people, the capacity of the roof, the capacity of the bars and the static load are confused.

What is dynamic load?

Dynamic load is the maximum weight that the vehicle roof can support while the vehicle is in motion. It is the value to be respected while driving. In your calculation you must include the weight of the tent, bars or platform and any accessories carried on the roof.

Example: If the vehicle roof supports dynamic 75 kg and the tent weighs 62 kg, you must also add the weight of the bars. If bars and fasteners weigh 6 kg, the total becomes 68 kg. You are within the limit; However, you do not have to add other accessories without redoing the calculation.

What is static load?

The static load concerns the stationary vehicle. When the awning is open and the vehicle is parked, the stresses are different than when driving. The load is distributed between the vehicle, bars, base of the tent and, in many folding tents, also by the ladder. For this reason, the weight of the occupants does not add to the dynamic load used for circulation.

But be careful: you must still respect the declared capacity of the tent, the ladder and the fixing system. The tent must be set up on a correct structure and the vehicle must be parked safely.

Where do I find the load capacity of my car's roof?

Usually in the vehicle owner's manual, in the section dedicated to roof racks, roof loads or accessories. If the data is not clearly indicated, you can contact the manufacturer, the dealer or request support from Carcamp providing the make, model, year and version of the vehicle.

How long should the roof bars hold?

The bars must have a capacity at least equal to the weight of the awning plus any accessories carried on the roof, and must be compatible with the vehicle. It is also important to consider the weight of the bars themselves, because it is part of the total dynamic load.

Not all bars are the same: some are designed for roof boxes or ski racks, others for larger loads. For roof tents and awnings it is preferable to use sturdy bars, with a suitable profile and specific fastening for the vehicle.

Is 2 bars, 3 bars or platform better?

Many awnings can be set up correctly on two bars if they are sturdy, well spaced and compatible. A third bar or platform can be useful on large tents, long vehicles, frequent use, off-road vehicles, roof racks or setups with multiple accessories.

The correct answer is not universal: you need to look at the weight of the awning, position of the tracks, length of the base, type of road and fastening system. The more demanding the use, the more important it is to distribute the load well.

What is the correct distance between the bars?

The distance must allow the curtain rails to rest and attach securely. If the bars are too close together, the load is concentrated in a small area; if they are too far away, they may not coincide with the tracks and brackets. Before assembly, you must check the awning manual, the position of the lower tracks and the geometry of the roof.

Can I use bars with a very high or very wide section?

It depends on the brackets and clamps provided. Some brackets have limitations on the height and width of the bar profile. If the bars are very thick, shaped or integrated into a platform, a specific kit or adaptation solution may be needed. You should never improvise unsuitable fixings.

Can I put accessories on or next to the tent?

Only if the model allows it and if the total load remains within the limits. Each accessory added to the roof increases weight, height, aerodynamic resistance and stress on bars and fixings. Shovels, plates, solar panels, boxes, kayaks or other equipment must be considered when calculating the dynamic load.

4. Assembly and installation

A well-assembled product is safer, quieter and lasts longer. Assembly is not difficult, but it must be done methodically.

How long does it take to install a rooftop tent?

The first assembly takes more time because you have to check the bars, position, centering, brackets and opening. With two people and ready equipment, the installation can normally be managed in a short time; subsequent times become much quicker. However, it is not an operation to be done in a hurry: safety depends on assembly.

Does it take two?

Yes, we recommend at least two people. Even a relatively lightweight tent is bulky and can be difficult to raise, center, and set down without scratching your vehicle. For large tents, tall cars, vans or off-road vehicles, three or four people or a lift may be needed.

Does the awning need to be centered on the vehicle?

When possible, yes. A centered mounting distributes weight better and improves ride. In some cases there may be a slight overhang, but it must not interfere with the tailgate, doors, antenna, spoiler, license plate, lights or opening of the awning. After assembly, always check the size of the open tent.

Should I check the bolts after the first few kilometres?

Yes. After the first assembly, check the tightening after a short distance, then after the first trips and periodically during the season. Vibrations, dirt, thermal expansion and settlement can loosen fixings and brackets. The check takes a few minutes and avoids many problems.

Can I set up or take down the tent every weekend?

Yes, but it pays to get organised. If you use it often, it may be useful to leave it installed during the season. However, if you use it occasionally, a dry storage space and a lifting system can make assembly and disassembly more practical. Every time you reassemble the awning, carry out the checks again as if it were a first installation.

Can Carcamp help me understand which bars to choose?

Yes. For a correct evaluation, send the make, model, year, version of the vehicle, any railings or fixed points, desired tent, number of people and type of trip. The more data you provide, the more accurate the advice will be.

5. Driving, consumption, wind and road safety

With a tent or a awning on the roof the vehicle changes: the weight at the top increases, the total height increases and the aerodynamics change.

What speed can I maintain with a rooftop tent mounted?

There is no one-size-fits-all number. You must respect the most prudent limit between vehicle, bars, roof rack, tent, weather conditions and road. The awning must travel closed, locked and properly secured. In crosswinds, heavy rain, a busy highway, a tall vehicle, or bad roads, reduce your speed.

As a practical criterion: drive progressively, avoid sudden maneuvers and do not treat the vehicle as if it were unloaded. If you notice any noise, vibration or abnormal movement, stop safely and check the fastenings and closures.

Does the tent increase consumption?

Yes, it can increase consumption because it adds weight and changes aerodynamics. The increase depends on the shape of the tent, height of the vehicle, speed, wind, bars and route. Closed hard tents tend to have neater aerodynamic handling; Soft tents with outer covers may be more sensitive to wind and resistance.

Do I have to change the way I drive?

Yes. With weight on the roof the center of gravity rises. It is best to accelerate and brake gradually, tackle curves and roundabouts more calmly, reduce speed on dirt roads and pay attention to side winds, overtaking by heavy vehicles and changing lanes.

Can I go off-road with the tent assembled?

Yes, but with common sense. Light dirt, gravel roads and easy slopes are one thing; twists, deep holes, branches, side slopes and continuous vibrations are another. For off-road use it is important to have sturdy bars or platform, controlled fixings, well distributed load and very low speed. After bumpy sections, always check the brackets and tightenings.

How do I calculate the total height of the vehicle?

Measure vehicle from ground to highest point with bars, awning, awning and accessories fitted. Write down the data on a label in the passenger compartment: you will need it for garages, covered car parks, ferries, barriers, underpasses, car washes and service areas.

Can I enter the car wash with the awning mounted?

It is not recommended. Close brushes, rollers and high-pressure jets can damage covers, shells, hinges, seals, stitching and accessories. Better to wash manually, without insisting on seams and closing points.

6. Use, comfort, weather and life in a tent

A rooftop tent must be fast, but also livable. Comfort comes from ventilation, mattress, humidity management, internal organization and correct use.

How long does it take to open a rooftop tent?

It depends on the model. Rigid ones like Dolomia and Ardesia favor speed and order. Folding awnings like the Alba and Aurora require a few more steps, but offer more living space. After a few uses the times are significantly reduced because the gestures become automatic.

Can I open the tent myself?

In many cases yes, especially after a bit of practice. However, the height of the vehicle, the type of tent, physical strength, the position of the cover and the management of the ladder can make it more comfortable for two people. For the first opening we always recommend calm, free space around the vehicle and reading the manual.

Can I close the wet tent?

If you have to leave again, yes. But as soon as possible you must reopen it and let it dry completely. Leaving a tent closed and damp for many hours or days can promote bad odors, mold, stains and fabric degradation. The rule is simple: if you close it wet, drying becomes an obligatory part of the trip.

Is condensation an infiltration?

Not necessarily. Condensation forms when warm, moist air produced by people, clothing, shoes, animals or the environment comes into contact with colder surfaces. It can also appear in perfectly waterproof tents.

To reduce it: ventilate, leave micro-openings when possible, don't sleep with everything sealed, avoid bringing wet clothing inside and dry mattress and fabrics after humid or cold nights.

Can I use the rooftop tent in winter?

Yes, with adequate equipment. You need the correct sleeping bag, thermal clothing, condensation management, dry mattress and ventilation. In case of heavy snow, strong winds or extreme weather, it is prudent to fold the tent or choose a more protected area.

Can I use a stove inside the tent?

Never use gas stoves, braziers, stoves or combustion systems inside the tent: the risk of fire and carbon monoxide is serious. Any electrical systems must be suitable for outdoor use, positioned safely, away from fabrics and used only with adequate ventilation and power. If in doubt, better correct sleeping bag and clothing.

Can I leave pillows, blankets or sleeping bags inside the closed tent?

It depends on the model and thickness. Some curtains allow you to leave thin linens inside, others require you to release the mattress to close correctly. Never force the closure: you could damage hinges, shell, covers, mechanisms or fabrics.

Can I bring the dog into the tent?

Yes, if you can get him on and off safely and if he remains supervised. Never leave an animal alone in a tent, especially in hot, cold or direct sun. For small or elderly dogs, manual help, a ramp or specific management may be needed.

7. Italy, Europe, stopping, camping and common sense

The rules change based on country, region, municipality, natural area, campsite, car park or private property. This section is for guidance and does not replace local regulations or opinions from competent authorities.

Is it legal to travel with a rooftop tent in Italy?

Yes, if the awning is closed, correctly fixed and transported in compliance with the limits of the vehicle and the Highway Code. The load must not fall, move, compromise stability, reduce visibility, obstruct driving, cover lights, license plate or signaling devices.

Can I sleep anywhere with the rooftop tent?

No. Having a rooftop tent does not automatically entitle you to camp anywhere. Campsites, agricultural campsites, authorized private areas and rest areas that allow this use are the safest solution. In public car parks, streets, beaches, parks, protected areas and inhabited centres, local signs and regulations must be checked.

What is the difference between parking and camping?

Stopping is simply stopping where permitted.Camping or encampment may be contested when it takes up outdoor space, opens structures, or installs tables, chairs, awnings, ladders, or other items that increase the overall size of the vehicle. (annex)

For motorhomes, the Highway Code provides a specific distinction between parking and camping when the vehicle does not take up space beyond its size and does not rest on the ground except with its wheels. A rooftop tent in a car should not automatically be treated like a camper: for this reason, if you open a tent, ladder, awning or annex, the prudent course is to consider it camping and use authorized areas.

Can I open the awning in a public car park?

It is generally to be avoided, except in areas where it is expressly permitted. Opening a awning means taking up space beyond the outline of the vehicle and can be considered camping or occupying land. Even a few minutes can create problems if the area is busy, urban or regulated.

Are the rules the same in Europe?

No. Each country has its own rules on free camping, overnight stays in cars, natural areas, private property, rest areas and car parks. Even within the same country, local rules can change. Before your trip, find out about your destination, municipality, natural parks, campsites and areas where you want to stop.

What are the good rules of conduct?
  • Use authorized areas when opening tent, awning or annex.
  • Don't take up more space than necessary.
  • Do not leave waste, liquids or traces of passage.
  • Do not mount equipment in prohibited or sensitive areas.
  • Respect silence, private property, residents and other travellers.
  • If in doubt, ask permission or change area.

8. Awnings, side walls and annex

The awning is not just shade: it creates the space where you cook, eat, store shoes and equipment, shelter from light rain and transform the vehicle into a real base camp.

Which awning Carcamp should I choose?
  • Oasi 270°: for maximum lateral coverage and large living area around the vehicle.
  • Brezza 180°: For wide coverage and flexible installation right, left or rear.
  • Riparo: for a standard solution with neat finish and coverage in aluminium.
  • Radura: for those who want simple, practical shade in multiple sizes.
What is the difference between awning standard, 180° and 270°?

A standard awning creates shade on one side of the vehicle. A 180° increases the surface area covered and can be more versatile. A 270° wraps an important part of the vehicle and creates a larger living area. The more the coverage grows, the more important bracketing, wind management, anchoring points and correct use of guy lines become.

Should a self-supporting awning still be staked?

Yes, when it stays open for longer or when the weather is changeable. Self-supporting does not mean indestructible: it means that it can support itself with an integrated structure in correct conditions. Wind, sudden gusts and uneven terrain can put a lot of stress on the arms, canvas and brackets. Anchoring well is always the safest choice.

Can I leave the awning open in strong winds?

No. In strong winds the awning must be closed. The cover can act like a sail and damage the arms, brackets, roof bars or bodywork. Better to close before than intervene when the wind has already increased.

What are side walls and annex for?

Walls and annex transform shade and awning into more sheltered spaces. They can be used for privacy, changing, storage, kitchen, protection from low sun, light wind and rain. However, they increase size and sensitivity to the wind, so they must be used in authorized areas and correctly anchored.

Is Annex Alba compatible with all curtains?

No, Annex Alba is designed for the Alba line and must be chosen in the correct size for the tent. Before purchasing, check the version of your Alba and the space available when the awning is open.

9. Cleaning, maintenance and conservation

A rooftop tent lives outside: sun, rain, resin, dust, salt, mud and condensation are part of the journey. Maintenance does not have to be complicated, but it must be regular.

How do I clean a rooftop tent Carcamp?

Use water, soft cloth and delicate products compatible with technical fabrics, PVC, aluminium, ABS or rigid shells. Avoid solvents, harsh degreasers, bleach, scouring sponges and close pressure washing on seams, zippers and seals. After cleaning, let it dry completely.

How do I remove resin, guano or stubborn dirt?

Intervene early. Soften with water, do not rub aggressively and remove gently. Resin and bird droppings can stain or ruin materials if they remain for a long time. More light passes are better than aggressive interventions.

Do the hinges need to be lubricated?

Yes, if they flow poorly or are dirty. First remove sand, dust and mud, then use a product suitable for zippers, avoiding lubricants that stain or retain dirt. Never force a stuck zipper.

How often do I check screws, brackets and bars?

Before every major trip, after the first uses, after bumpy roads and periodically during the season. Check awning brackets, bolts, nuts, bars, feet, vehicle attachments, awning and accessories.

How do I store the tent when I'm not using it?

Clean, dry, in a ventilated place and protected from humidity, rodents, direct sunlight and deformations. If you store it for months, check it periodically and, when possible, open it to air. Don't use non-breathable plastic covers if they can trap moisture.

Can I leave the tent erected all year round?

Yes, if you use it often and if you accept greater consumption, height, exposure and external wear. If it remains unused for long periods, disassembling it and storing it dry can better preserve fabrics, covers, shell and components.

10. Common problems and quick fixes

Many problems are not defects: they often depend on assembly, humidity, adjustment, use or maintenance. Here's how to find your way before contacting assistance.

The awning makes noise when running: what should I check?
  • Cover or shell completely closed.
  • Correctly secured straps and locks.
  • Tightened brackets and bolts.
  • Roof bars well secured to the vehicle.
  • No loose accessories on the roof.
  • Curtain centered and not twisted.
The awning seems to move on the bars: is this normal?

No, it shouldn't move. Stop safely and immediately check fixings, brackets, nuts and bars. If the movement continues, do not continue the journey until resolved. A small play can become a serious problem with wind and vibrations.

I find water or humidity inside: infiltration or condensation?

First distinguish. If the humidity is widespread, especially in the morning, under mattress or on cold surfaces, it may be condensation. However, if water enters from a specific point during rain, there may be a problem with the closure, stitching, zip, seal or assembly. Take clear photos and report when it happens: rain, wind, curtain closed, curtain open, affected side.

The ladder does not support well: what should I do?

The ladder must rest on stable ground and with a correct inclination. It must not hang, slip or work crookedly. On soft ground use a stable base. On slopes or uneven surfaces, consider repositioning the vehicle.

The awning stretches badly or leaks

Check inclination, poles, guy lines and anchor points. The sheet must drain the water and not create basins. In case of heavy rain or wind, close the awning. Pockets of water can stress the arms, sheet and brackets.

The soft cover seems to pull too much when closing

Check that the curtain is folded correctly, that the fabric is not pinched, that the ladder and mattress are in the intended position and that there are no objects that are too thick inside. Do not force: closing under pressure can ruin zips, stitching or covers.

11. Warranty, spare parts and support Carcamp

Support works best when it receives accurate information. Photo, model, vehicle and assembly help distinguish defect, adjustment, wear, replacement or installation error.

What warranty do Carcamp products have?

New products sold to consumers are covered by the legal guarantee provided for by current legislation. Any additional commercial conditions, extensions or exclusions are indicated in the sales documents or on the dedicated pages. The warranty does not cover damage from incorrect assembly, improper use, strong winds, accidents, impacts, unauthorized modifications, lack of maintenance or normal wear and tear.

Are spare parts available?

Carcamp works to keep spare parts and technical components available for compatible tents, awnings, covers, ladders, brackets, fixings, walls and accessories. Availability may vary depending on model, version and year of production.

What should I send to support?
  • Order number or proof of purchase.
  • Product model and version.
  • General photos of the product mounted on the vehicle.
  • Close-up photos of the problem.
  • Photos of bars, brackets and fixings.
  • Description of when the problem occurs.
  • Make, model and year of the vehicle.
Can I modify the curtain, brackets or awning?

Unauthorized structural modifications are discouraged. Holes, cuts, welds, improvised brackets, accessories that are too heavy or unsuitable fixings can compromise safety and warranty. If you need an adaptation, please compare with Carcamp first.
